About this grant / loan

EDMH financial support for doctoral students

You get a one-off contribution towards specific research costs during your PhD. It is paid by the Ecole Doctorale Montaigne Humanites (EDMH) at Universite Bordeaux Montaigne. It covers three kinds of activity: field trips of at least 15 days in France or abroad, taking part in conferences abroad, and shared doctoral activities such as writing seminars or exchange days. Only requests with a total budget above 199 EUR are eligible, and each activity type has its own ceiling. The amount is worked out per project and depends on the budget you submit. This is not a monthly grant, only these targeted contributions.

Who can apply

  • Level: You are a PhD student enrolled at the EDMH doctoral school of Universite Bordeaux Montaigne.
  • Stage: You have not yet submitted or defended your thesis.
  • Field of study: Any humanities or social science subject within the doctoral school.
  • Concrete project: You have a specific activity to fund with a budget over 199 EUR, such as a 15-day field trip or a conference abroad.
  • Funding priority: If you have no other funding for the activity, you are given priority.
  • Not on a break: You cannot apply if you have paused your PhD (a "cesure").

How to apply

You send your application as a single PDF by email to the doctoral school. There are three campaigns each year. For the second 2026 campaign, covering activities from September to December 2026, the call opens on 1 June 2026 and closes on 1 July 2026 at 18:00. Decisions are sent around 15 July 2026. A commission of the doctoral school council decides who gets funded.

How realistic are your chances?

This support is only for PhD students already enrolled at this doctoral school, so the eligible group is small. Still, the school says its budget cannot cover every request, so funding is a possibility, not a right. Your prospects are best if you have no other funding for the activity, since those applicants get priority, and if you submit a clear, well-costed budget. Applying early in the year helps, as later campaigns depend on what is left.
