About this scholarship
What the Fulbright-UCL Award gives you
You will receive a full waiver of tuition fees for your first year at University College London (UCL), as well as a living allowance of approximately 2,560 EUR per month (around £2,236), which will be paid over 10 months. This amounts to a total of approximately £22,363.. You will also receive a travel allowance of 1,500 USD, health and accident insurance, and a place on the Fulbright Enrichment Programme, which includes pre-departure webinars and an induction session upon your arrival in the UK. The scholarship is awarded by the US-UK Fulbright Commission in collaboration with UCL, one of London’s largest research universities. Please note that no financial support is provided for family members and that the amount of the scholarship does not change depending on the duration of your studies.
Who can apply
- Nationality: You must be a US citizen. People with dual nationality (US and UK) may also apply.
- Degree so far: You hold a bachelor’s degree (or have equivalent professional experience) prior to your departure for the UK. At the start of the funding period, you have not yet obtained a doctoral degree.
- What you study: A master’s degree programme with lectures or a research-based degree programme at UCL. Almost all subject areas are available. Not eligible: places on clinical medicine programmes (including specialist medical training), MBA programmes and joint programmes with other universities.
- Full time only: Part-time and distance-learning courses are not permitted.
- UK experience: You must not have lived or studied in the UK in the year prior to the award of the scholarship. A short period spent abroad as part of your undergraduate degree is not a problem. Preference will be given to applicants with little previous experience in the UK.
- What counts in selection: Outstanding academic or professional achievements, a clearly justified reason for wishing to study your specific project at UCL, a genuine interest in life in the UK, and involvement in voluntary work or extracurricular activities.
How to apply
You will need to submit two applications: the Fulbright online application (select ‘University College London’ as the scholarship) and UCL’s own admissions application. The application deadline is 6 October at 5 pm (US Eastern Time). Finalists will receive a conditional offer of admission and must subsequently secure a place on their chosen UCL programme. You do not need a letter of admission from UCL when applying.
How realistic are your chances?
This scholarship funds only one place and attracted 122 2026/27 applications in this round, making it one of the most competitive scholarships within the UK partnership. Grades alone are not the deciding factor: the selection committee places great importance on a compelling project proposal that specifically relates to UCL, as well as on genuine social engagement. If you have an outstanding academic record, a well-defined study plan and have spent little time in the UK so far, you fit the profile well, but you must be prepared for stiff competition.
