Almedina Prize

You will win four books published by Grupo Almedina, which you can choose yourself from the current range. This is a one-off prize, not a cash payment or a monthly allowance. The University of Minho in Braga, Portugal, awards this prize in collaboration with the bookshop and publishing house Livraria Almedina. It recognises outstanding achievements by students who receive a state scholarship. Each year, 11 prizes are awarded, one for each faculty or institute at the university.

Who can apply

• University: You are studying at the University of Minho in Braga, Portugal.
• Degree: You are enrolled on a Bachelor’s degree programme (Licenciatura) or an integrated Master’s degree programme (Mestrado Integrado).
• Field of study: All subjects qualify. One prize goes to each school and institute, from law and engineering to medicine, psychology and the arts.
• Financial need: You are the recipient of a means-tested government scholarship under the ‘Ação Social Escolar do Ensino Superior’ (Social Programme for Higher Education) scheme. Priority is given to the most financially disadvantaged scholarship holders.
• Grades: In the previous academic year you had the highest weighted average mark among eligible students in your school, and you passed every course in your study plan.
• Timing: You didn’t win the Almedina Prize at the last awards ceremony.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. The university’s ‘Social Action Services’ department and the ‘Academic Management Services’ department select the award winners on the basis of their scholarship and academic records. Your university will then notify you via your university email address. The award winners will receive their books at a public ceremony, which usually takes place on the university’s annual celebration day.
