About this scholarship

What you get

You will receive a monthly Erasmus+ grant of about 500 EUR. Erasmus+ is the EU’s exchange programme, which funds your studies or a work placement abroad. You can study for 3 to 12 months or undertake an internship for 2 to 12 months – at a partner university of the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu in Portugal. The exact amount of the grant is set by the European Commission; it depends on your destination country and the year in question. The International Office will help you find accommodation, sort out visa matters and arrange health insurance before you arrive. As an Erasmus student, you do not pay any tuition fees in Viseu.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You are enrolled at the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu and would like to study abroad, or you are studying at one of the Erasmus partner universities and have been selected for a placement in Viseu.
  • Degree level: You are a Bachelor’s or Master’s student.
  • Field of study: Any subject area is eligible, for example art, agriculture, economics, sport, education, engineering, social work, healthcare, technology and tourism. Some courses are taught in English.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. If you are from a country outside the EU and intend to stay here for longer than 90 days, you will need a national D visa. The relevant authority will advise you on this matter.
  • Grades: Selection is based primarily on your weighted average mark. First-time applicants and students in the second half of their degree programme have an advantage in this regard.

How to apply

First, your home university will put you forward. You will then receive your login details by email and apply online. The application deadline is 15 June for the first semester or a full academic year, and 30 November for the second semester.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is aimed exclusively at students at the University of Viseu or its partner universities; consequently, the pool of eligible applicants is small. If you are already enrolled at a partner university and are nominated, your grade point average and the number of places available are the biggest hurdles. First-time applicants in their later years of study have a better chance.
