About this scholarship

What you get

You will receive a monthly PhD scholarship (a living allowance for PhD students) for the duration of your PhD, for up to 4 years. You will also receive additional support towards tuition fees, travel expenses and research activities. You will pursue your PhD at a Portuguese university, not at MIT, but you will become part of the MIT Portugal Community and gain access to the programme’s professional development and networking events. The scholarship is funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) under its agreement with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Who can apply

  • Degree: You hold a Master’s degree or an equivalent, recognised qualification in a subject area covered by the degree programme.
  • Research topic: Your PhD thesis aligns with one of MIT Portugal’s key focus areas. These include climate science and climate change, artificial intelligence, energy, space, chips and nanotechnology, sustainable cities, and the digital transformation of manufacturing.
  • Where you study: You enrol on a PhD programme at a Portuguese university that matches your field of research.
  • Nationality: Anyone can apply. Priority is given to Portuguese nationals and other EU citizens. If you are from a country outside the EU, you will need a Portuguese host institution or a valid Portuguese residence permit, and selection may be based on an interview.

How to apply

You should apply online as soon as a call for applications for a PhD scholarship is published, by the deadline specified in the call. The most recent calls for applications closed on 15 April. An online information session takes place at the start of each application round, and a panel of experts assesses the applications.
