Prémio João Monjardino

You receive a one-off cash prize of 10,000 EUR for the best published scientific paper in biomedical and health sciences on the year's set topic. For 2026 the topic is multimorbidity and frailty in older people. This means the clinical and treatment challenges of patients who have several illnesses at once. The winner also gives a public talk on the topic at the award ceremony. The award is given once a year by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) and the Fundação Professor Francisco Pulido Valente (FFPV), who each pay half.

Who can apply

• Who you are: You are a researcher working at a Portuguese scientific or technological institution.
• Age: You are under 35 on the day you submit your application.
• Your paper: You submit one original paper that is already published, or formally accepted for publication with proof, in a Portuguese or international specialist journal.
• Your role: You are the first author, or a co-author whose contribution the publication recognises as equal to the first author's.
• Field: The paper fits the year's set topic within biomedical and health sciences.

How to apply

You apply through the online form linked on the FCT call page. For the 2026 round you can apply from 6 July to 30 September 2026, 17:00 Lisbon time. A jury of biomedical and health researchers, plus one representative each from FCT and FFPV, judges the entries. The jury may ask you for written clarifications. Results are published within 90 working days of the deadline.
