About this scholarship

Almada higher education scholarship

You will receive a one-off payment for one academic year, which is paid in cash. In recent years, this amount has been around 1,000 EUR, but the exact amount is determined each year on the basis of the local authority’s budget. The money comes from the Camara Municipal de Almada (Almada City Council) in Portugal. It is intended to help students from low-income households to fund their studies. The city council awards around 20 grants each year.

Who can apply

  • Where you live: You have been living in the municipality of Almada for more than three years. This rule does not apply if you are employed by the municipality.
  • Level of study: You are enrolled in a degree programme at a higher education institution. Short specialisation courses do not count.
  • Field of study: All topics are permitted.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Financial need: You and your family are unable to fund your studies from your own resources. Your household’s per capita income must be below a limit set annually.
  • Grades: You have good academic results.
  • No double support: You are not currently receiving school-based social assistance or a similar benefit from any other organisation in the year in which you are applying. You do not yet hold an equivalent qualification.

How to apply

You apply in person at the municipality's social development office (Direcao Municipal de Desenvolvimento Social Integrado). The application window usually runs through October. In 2025 it closes on 31 October. If there are more applicants than scholarships, priority goes first to past holders who keep up their results, then to the lowest household income per person, then to the best grades. Applicants with a certified disability above 30% have absolute priority.
