About this scholarship

Almeirim higher education scholarship

You will receive up to 200 EUR per month, paid in up to 10 monthly instalments throughout the academic year, to cover your studies at a public higher education institution in Portugal. Instead of this scholarship, you may opt for a travel allowance of up to 100 EUR per month to cover your public transport costs. You cannot claim both at the same time. If you receive another grant and the total of both grants exceeds 400 EUR per month, Almeirim will reduce the amount to remain below this ceiling. The funding comes from Almeirim Town Council (Câmara Municipal de Almeirim) and is intended to help students from low-income households to commence and complete their studies.

Who can apply

  • Where you live: You have been living in the Almeirim district for more than 5 years.
  • Degree level: You are enrolled on a Bachelor’s degree programme (Licenciatura), an integrated Master’s degree programme (Mestrado Integrado) or a higher technical vocational training programme (Curso Técnico Superior Profissional). Stand-alone Master’s degree programmes or PhD programmes are not eligible for funding.
  • University: Your institution is a public one (university, polytechnic or similar), anywhere in Portugal.
  • Field of study: Any topic is fine.
  • No prior degree: You do not already hold a higher education qualification.
  • Grades: You achieved good results in the last school or academic year.
  • Financial need: The average net income per person in your household is below the national minimum wage. Your own income from work is less than 10 times the IAS (the Portuguese reference value for social assistance) per year.
  • State grant applied for: You have already submitted an application for a grant to your university’s student finance office and can provide the notification of approval or rejection.

How to apply

You must submit the application form to the City Council’s Education Department every year between 1 and 31 October. For the year 2026/2027, the period runs from 1 to 31 October 2026. Applicants are ranked using a points-based system based on income, academic results, age and household size. The City Council will confirm the allocation within 30 working days after the deadline.
