DGES need-based scholarship at Fernando Pessoa University

You will receive a monthly grant for the academic year for which you are applying. The amount varies and is based on your household’s income and assets. The money comes directly from the Portuguese government and does not need to be repaid. It is intended to cover your study costs and any compulsory work placements. The lower your household’s financial resources, the higher your grant will be. If you apply late in the year, the amount will be reduced in proportion to the number of months remaining until the end of the year. At Fernando Pessoa University (UFP) in Porto, the Office for Social Measures in Education (GASE) is responsible for awarding the grant.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled at Fernando Pessoa University in Porto.
• Financial need: Your household’s income and assets are below the official income thresholds. This is the main criterion.
• Field of study: All subjects qualify.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

Applications are made online via the portal of the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES) at dges.gov.pt. You can use the scholarship calculator available there to estimate the amount of your scholarship in advance. The main application period runs from 14 August to 2 October. If you enrol after 30 September, you will have 20 working days from the date of enrolment. You can also submit a late application between 3 October and 31 May, although the scholarship amount will then be lower.
