About this scholarship
What you get
You will receive a monthly cash grant, which helps to cover the costs of accommodation, meals, travel, study materials and tuition fees. The amount is not fixed. It is calculated each year based on your household income, so that students from families on lower incomes receive a higher amount. This grant does not need to be repaid. It is funded by the Portuguese government and the European Social Fund, and is administered locally by the Social Services of the University of Aveiro (SASUA). You must submit a new application for each academic year.
In addition to the basic grant, you may be eligible for further grants:
- A housing allowance if your permanent residence is 50 km or more from the university.
- An allowance for students with a disability of 60% or more.
- An Erasmus+ mobility grant (additional financial support for studying abroad).
- A one-off payment for some first-year students who have received the highest level of the Portuguese family allowance.
Who can apply
- Financial need: Your family cannot cover the costs of a university degree on their own. This is determined by an assessment of your household income.
- Where you study: You’re studying at the University of Aveiro in Portugal.
- Level: You are enrolled on a Bachelor’s degree programme (Licenciatura), an integrated Master’s programme, a Master’s programme or a vocational technical degree programme (CTESP). PhD scholarships are dealt with separately.
- Field of study: Any topic is fine.
- Course load: You are enrolled in at least 30 ECTS credits. Exceptions apply during a thesis or internship phase.
- Grades: You have earned enough credits over the past year. If you have taken 36 or more ECTS credits, you must have passed at least 36 of them. If you have taken fewer, you must have passed all of them.
- Nationality: You are a Portuguese national, an EU citizen living or working in Portugal (or a member of their family), a non-EU citizen with a permanent or long-term residence permit, a stateless person, or a person enjoying international or temporary protection. Students who have been admitted under international student status are generally not eligible to apply.
- No other full grant: You are not currently receiving a full scholarship from any other organisation.
How to apply
Applications are made online via the IES portal (Instituto para o Ensino Superior). First-time applicants must request their login details on the university’s website. Previous applicants may continue to use their existing login details. The main application window runs each year from 14 August to 2 October. You may also apply late, from 3 October to 31 May; however, the scholarship will then be reduced in proportion to the number of months remaining in the year.
If this grant does not cover your needs, our guide Scholarships in Portugal brings together further funding options available to students in Portugal.
