What you get

You have been awarded a tax-free training bursary of up to about EUR 22,800 (£20,000) for a one-year postgraduate teacher training programme at the University of Plymouth in England. The funding comes from the UK Department for Education and not from the University of Plymouth itself. It is intended for teacher training students in subjects where there is a shortage of teachers. The amount of funding depends on your subject and your final degree mark:

• Physics, chemistry or maths: approximately 22,800 euros (£20,000) for a ‘very good’ grade, approximately 17,100 euros (£15,000) for a 2:1 or around 13,700 euros (£12,000) with a 2:2.
• English, geography, history, music, biology or primary teaching: via 10,300 (£9,000) with a first one, or via 4,600 (£4,000) with a 2:1.

If you are studying physics or chemistry and have achieved a ‘First’ or a 2:1, you can also apply for a separate professional association scholarship worth approximately 22,800 euros (£20,000). If you do not receive this scholarship, you will still receive the standard funding mentioned above.

Who can apply

• Level: You are starting a postgraduate teacher training programme, i.e. a course of study that will qualify you to work as a teacher.
• University: You’re studying at the University of Plymouth in England.
• Subject: You teach subject: as your main subject – physics, chemistry, mathematics, English, geography, history, music or biology – or are training to become a primary school teacher. Art, design and drama are not taken into account.
• Grades: Your final grade determines the amount of funding you will receive. In subjects with lower priority, a mark of 2:2 will not qualify you for funding; you therefore need a ‘1’ or a mark of 2:1 in those subjects.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. Please check whether you meet the UK eligibility criteria for these government scholarships.
