Botín Foundation - Scholarships for the Arts

Benefit

You will receive 23,000 EUR for a period of nine months to develop your own art project. The funding covers travel, accommodation and living expenses, as well as studio rent, equipment and other production costs. If you need to move to another country for the project, you will also receive health insurance. The Spanish Fundación Botín awards six of these grants each year and has supported more than 200 artists since 1993. You may carry out your project at a location of your choice, whether in Spain or abroad. Your work will later be exhibited at the Centro Botín in Santander as part of the annual ‘Itinerarios’ exhibition. The grant is paid in instalments: 45% at the start, followed by quarterly payments, and finally 5% upon submission of your final report.

Eligibility

• Field: You work in the field of the visual arts (art and design). The scholarship supports practical, creative projects, but not theoretical or written work.
• Nationality: Open to artists of all nationalities.
• Age: There is no age limit for five of the six scholarships.
• The one special scholarship: One of the six places is reserved primarily for people who are Spanish nationals or have been living in Spain for at least five years, fall under 30 and wish to go abroad to study, work or settle there.
• Other funding: This grant cannot be combined with any other institutional funding for the same project.

Complete the online form on the Fundación Botín website. Please also submit your application documents (CV, project description and images of your work) in hard copy, in Spanish or English, by 8 May. A jury comprising curators and artists will select the winners; their decision is final.

How realistic are your chances?

This is one of Spain’s best-known private art grants, open to artists of any nationality. As a result, the pool of applicants is diverse and the six places are highly competitive. Selection is based on the quality and originality of your project proposal, which is assessed by a panel of experts. A clear, well-reasoned project with compelling visual documentation is what sets applicants apart from the rest.
