About this scholarship

What the New Carlsberg Foundation funds

You will receive project-based grants for art and art research in Denmark. There is no fixed amount. Each application is assessed on a case-by-case basis, and the amount awarded depends on the specific project. The funding covers the visual arts in the broadest sense, including applied arts, architecture and landscape design. The funding is allocated across several areas. A PhD scholarship (a funded research post) in the field of art research can cover up to 2 million DKK (approximately 268,000 euros) for the salary. In addition, you may receive up to 100,000 DKK (approximately 13,400 EUR) for activity costs and up to 750,000 DKK (approximately 100,000 EUR) for fixed costs such as tuition fees and institutional overheads. Research or study trips are funded with up to 50,000 DKK (approx. 6,700 EUR) for a single journey, up to 125,000 DKK (approx. 16,800 EUR) for a joint student trip and up to 75,000 DKK (approx. 10,000 EUR) for an art history conference. The foundation also funds museum exhibitions, art publications, works of art for museums and permanent public art projects. It is a private, independent Danish art foundation, established in 1902 by the brewer Carl Jacobsen and his wife Ottilia Jacobsen.

Who can apply

  • Who you are: Depending on the field, individuals, groups and organisations may apply. Researchers, museum staff, museums, art centres, art academies, local authorities, schools and hospitals may apply for different fields.
  • Art research: For PhD and postdoctoral fellowships, a project is required that is carried out jointly by a research institution (a Danish university or a museum engaged in genuine research) and an exhibition venue such as an art museum or an arts centre.
  • Trips and conferences: For research and study trips, researchers and art professionals linked to an institution are preferred. Joint student trips are for Danish art academies.
  • Field: Your project must relate to the visual arts in the broadest sense, including the applied arts, architecture and landscape design.
  • Where it happens: The focus is on Danish art. Exhibitions and museum projects abroad may also be eligible for funding, provided they deal with Danish contemporary art or Danish artists.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.

How to apply

You create a profile in the Foundation’s online application system and submit a form containing a project summary, a budget and supporting documents. Each category has its own deadline (all at 12.00 midday). For art research, there is one call for applications per year; the next one takes place on 11 October 2027. Exhibitions take place twice a year, in spring and autumn; the next ones are on 25 January and 23 August 2027. Research and study trips also take place twice a year, in spring and autumn; the next ones are on 2 April 2027. The deadline for submissions for publications is 26 February 2027. The deadline for submissions of museum artworks and public art projects is 18 December 2026. Your application will be reviewed at the next board meeting following the deadline. Grants for art research are also initially assessed by an academic evaluation committee.
