What Becas Chile pays for

Chile's national research agency (ANID) pays for your whole studies abroad. You get:

• Your full tuition, whatever your university charges
• A monthly living allowance that varies by country and city
• Economy flights out and back for you and your family
• Health insurance of about EUR 740 per year (USD 800)
• A book and materials allowance of about EUR 275 per year (USD 300)
• A one-off setup payment and a one-off return payment of about EUR 460 each (USD 500)
• Visa costs for you and your family
• Language-course support if you need it

The doctorate is funded for up to 4 years and the master's for up to 2 years. Funding is renewed each year. Around 100 doctoral awards were offered in the last round.

Who can apply

• Where you go: You study full-time and in person at a university abroad, not in Chile. Distance or part-time programmes do not count.
• Level: You have a place, or are already enrolled, in a doctoral or master's programme abroad. MBA and business- or tax-law master's (LL.M.) are not funded.
• Your prior degree: You hold a Chilean licenciatura (at least 8 semesters), a professional title (at least 10 semesters), or a foreign equivalent.
• Grades: You need one of two marks: a prior-study average of at least 5.0 on Chile's 1-to-7 scale, or a place in the top 30% of your graduating class.
• Nationality: You are a Chilean citizen, or a foreigner with permanent residence (permanencia definitiva) in Chile.
• Field of study: All subjects can apply. Priority areas such as public and cyber security, artificial intelligence, climate change and quantum technologies take roughly 70% of the awards.
• Language: For programmes taught in English, German or French you show a language certificate, unless your admission is unconditional.
• No double funding: You have not held a Becas Chile award for the same or a higher level before, and you hold no other grant at the same time.
• After you finish: You agree to return to Chile once your studies are done.

How to apply

You apply online through ANID's application system (spl.anid.cl) during the yearly call. It opens in spring with a deadline a few weeks later. Your documents, in Spanish or English, and your confidential reference letters must arrive by the deadline. Selection is based on your documents only, with no interview. You hear the result a few weeks after the deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

This is Chile's main state scholarship for studying abroad and it is widely known, so with around 100 places per programme the competition is real. Your prospects improve markedly if your grades or class ranking are strong and your target university ranks well, since university quality alone counts for 20% of the score. Choosing a priority field such as AI or climate research helps too, as most awards go there.
