What you get

You take a paid teaching-assistant job at a school or university abroad, helping students practise spoken French. The host country pays you, and the amount varies by destination. In New Zealand for 2026-2027, for example, it is about 637 EUR per month (NZ$ 1,070) for 24 hours a week. You usually work 12 to 24 hours a week, so many assistants study alongside the job. The placement lasts 4.5 to 12 months, depending on the country. Your tasks include conversation classes, introducing French culture, helping learners one-to-one, running a French club and preparing teaching materials. Around 1,400 places are offered each year in more than 37 countries. The programme is run by France Éducation international, a French state body overseen by the education ministry.

Who can apply

• Language: French is one of your native languages.
• Nationality: You are French. Some destination countries also accept other nationalities.
• Age: You are between 20 and 35 on 31 December of the year your placement starts.
• Schooling: You did most of your secondary education at a French school, in France or abroad.
• Enrolment: You are enrolled at a French higher-education institution, whether on campus, by distance learning or on an exchange abroad. Some countries accept other statuses.
• Diploma: By the time your application is confirmed, you hold the qualification the destination country requires.
• Local language: You can prove at least level B1 in the language of the host country, or higher if that country asks for it.

How to apply

You apply online through the ADELE platform, and you may submit only one application. The 2026-2027 campaign opens on 6 January 2026. The deadline depends on your chosen country: 10 March 2026 for destinations like Austria, Switzerland, the UK, the USA and China, with later dates running through to 23 October 2026 for several South American countries. Germany closes 30 March 2026 for priority applicants and 15 June 2026 otherwise. A teacher assesses your motivation and language level before you confirm your file. France Éducation international and the foreign partner then make the final decision.

How realistic are your chances?

With about 1,400 places a year across more than 37 countries, the programme is large, but the requirements are specific: French as a native language, French schooling, enrolment at a French university and the right age. If you clearly meet these conditions, your prospects are solid, especially for less popular destinations. Check your country's deadline early, as they vary widely and you get only one application.
