Emergency aid for Galician university students (ED433A)

You get a one-off payment of 1,750 to 3,000 EUR if an unexpected crisis during the academic year leaves you short of money to keep studying. The exact amount depends on your family's income per person: up to 3,000 EUR if that income stays at or below 5,000 EUR, 2,500 EUR between 5,001 and 5,700 EUR, 2,000 EUR between 5,701 and 6,400 EUR, and 1,750 EUR above that up to the cut-off. The money comes from the Xunta de Galicia, the regional government. It is a single lump sum, not a monthly grant.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled at one of the three public universities in Galicia: Santiago de Compostela, A Coruña or Vigo.
• Degree: You are studying for an official bachelor's degree (grao).
• Study load: You are enrolled for at least 50 ECTS credits, or at least 30 if that is all you have left to finish.
• Sudden hardship: An unforeseen event this academic year has hit your family's finances. Examples: the death of a parent who supported you, a parent losing their job, serious illness, a permanent work disability, unpaid maintenance after a divorce, or being a victim of gender violence or terrorism.
• Income limit: Your family's income per person stays below 1.8 times the yearly non-contributory pension set by the national budget.
• One-time only: You have not already received this aid for the same situation.

How to apply

You apply online through the Xunta's electronic office (sede.xunta.gal), signing in with a digital certificate or Chave365. Apply within one month of the event that caused the hardship, and no later than 31 July of the academic year. There are no interviews. A committee reviews applications every two months.

How realistic are your chances?

This aid is not competitive: everyone who meets the conditions and documents their emergency can receive it, rather than competing for a fixed number of places. The real hurdle is proof. You need a social worker's report, income records and evidence of the sudden event. If you clearly fit the criteria and can back up your case, your prospects are good, so apply as soon as the crisis hits.
