What the Bakala Foundation gives you

You will receive 765 EUR per month for studying abroad. A bachelor’s degree programme abroad is funded for up to 5 years. A master’s or doctoral degree programme abroad is funded for up to 3 years. Each call for applications has a fixed number of places (10 for study abroad in the years 2026–2027). The Foundation was established in accordance with the will of Konstantinos P. Bakalas and has been supporting students of Arcadian origin since 1964.

Who can apply

• Family roots: You are of Arcadian descent on either your father’s or mother’s side. You also meet the requirements if you attended a secondary school in Arcadia (or Tripoli) for at least 4 school years, even if these years were not consecutive.
• Where you go: You are studying at a university outside Greece.
• Level: You are starting or continuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD programme abroad.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Grades: You must have a very strong academic record. Applicants with outstanding secondary school or higher education qualifications will be given priority, and Master’s applicants must have achieved at least a ‘Lian Kalos’ (very good) grade.
• Financial need: Your own taxable income and that of your parents must show that you are unable to finance your studies yourself.
• No other scholarship: You are not currently receiving any other scholarship or monthly payment.
• Military service (men): Male applicants must have completed, deferred or been exempted from military service.

How to apply

Please submit your application in person or by post to the Foundation’s office in Athens by 8 May. Selection is based on a written and oral examination at the University of Athens. Applicants going abroad must also sit a language test, unless they already hold a recognised language certificate or a university admission qualification. The minimum mark is 14 out of 20.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is awarded only to a very small group. You must be from Arcadia, be studying abroad, demonstrate financial need and pass a selection test – so the pool of eligible applicants is small. If you clearly meet these requirements and can demonstrate good grades, your chances are good, as very few applicants fulfil all the criteria at the same time. Prepare thoroughly for the written and oral examinations, as these will determine who is awarded a place.
