About this scholarship
Benefit
You get a one-year training grant worth 16,000 EUR gross if you are placed in Vitoria-Gasteiz, or 24,000 EUR gross if you go to one of the Basque delegations abroad. The Basque Government (Lehendakaritza) offers 14 of these places each year to train young graduates in external relations. You spend 12 months working and learning either at the General Secretariat in Vitoria-Gasteiz or at a Basque delegation abroad. The grant covers three areas: EU affairs (places in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Brussels and Paris), the Basque community abroad (Vitoria-Gasteiz, Buenos Aires and New York), and foreign action and multilateral bodies (Vitoria-Gasteiz, Santiago de Chile and Bogota). You may apply for only one area. The money is subject to income tax and social security. It is a training grant, not a job. You cannot hold it alongside another grant or paid work, and the period cannot be extended.
Eligibility
- Basque link: You were registered as living in the Basque Country before 1 January of the year the grant is announced, or you belong to an officially recognised Basque centre (Euskal Etxea) abroad.
- Degree: You have finished a university degree (Licenciatura, Grado or equivalent). A foreign qualification must be officially recognised in Spain.
- Age: You are 28 or younger on 1 January of the year the grant is announced.
- No earlier grant: You have not previously held a graduate grant funded by the Basque budget.
- Clean record: You have no criminal or administrative penalty and no pending repayment procedure that would bar you from public grants.
- Field of study: Any subject is accepted, but your knowledge is tested against the area you choose.
How to apply
You apply online through the Basque Government portal. The application window runs for about a month across July and August. After a check of your documents, you sit a 30-minute written test of 15 multiple-choice questions on your chosen area. The selection committee may also invite you to an interview. Places are ranked and awarded on a points system covering your grades, specialist courses, Basque, English and other languages, and the written test.
How realistic are your chances?
This grant is cut narrowly. You must have a Basque link, be under 28 and hold a degree, so the eligible pool is limited to young Basque graduates. With only 14 places and points weighted heavily towards language skills, strong certificates in Basque (Euskera) and English make a real difference. If you fit the profile and can show solid grades and languages, your prospects are fair. Sit the written test well prepared.
