Bourses Doctorales de Mobilite Internationale (BDMI) - Universite Paris Cite

What you get

You get a grant of 750 EUR to 4,000 EUR towards a research stay abroad during your PhD, plus a travel top-up of 200 EUR for destinations in Europe or 1,000 EUR for destinations outside Europe. The exact amount depends on how long you go and what your project costs. Your individual notification confirms the final figure. The stay must last at least three weeks. You get 80% when you arrive and the remaining 20% once you return. The grant comes from Universite Paris Cite, jointly run by its College des ecoles doctorales (CED) and the SMARTS-UP project.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a registered PhD student at Universite Paris Cite for the 2025/2026 year. Your enrolment must be complete when you apply, not just pending.
• Year of study: Students in years 1 to 3 get priority. Years 4, 5 and 6 can still apply but rank lower. From year 7 onwards you cannot apply.
• What it funds: A research stay abroad linked to your thesis. Conference or seminar trips are not covered. Stays at your joint-supervision (cotutelle) partner institution are not a priority.
• Approvals: Your thesis supervisor and research lab agree to the trip, and the host lab abroad has accepted you.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
• Previous grants: If you already had a mobility grant from the CED or SMARTS-UP, you can reapply but rank lower, and earlier support may reduce your amount.

How to apply

You send your complete application by email to your doctoral school, which reviews it and forwards it with its assessment to the CED. For the 2025/2026 round the deadline is 12 January 2026, and results are announced by 17 February 2026. Your whole stay must finish by 30 November 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is only open to PhD students already enrolled at Universite Paris Cite, so the pool is limited to its own doctoral candidates. If you are in your first three years, have your supervisor's backing and a firm acceptance from a host lab abroad, you fit the priority group and your prospects are good. Later-year students and those who already received such a grant can still apply but rank behind the priority cases.
