SECIHTI postgraduate scholarship abroad

You get a monthly grant to study a master's or doctorate abroad, funded by Mexico's science ministry (SECIHTI). In Europe you receive 1,240 EUR per month, or 1,512 EUR if you support family members. In the United Kingdom you get 1,030 GBP (about 1,150 EUR), and in the rest of the world 1,250 USD (about 1,150 EUR); each amount rises if you have dependants. You also get a yearly health-insurance payment, from 660 EUR in Europe up to more than 2,300 EUR with three dependants. Some scholarship types (Type 1, and the DAAD and COMECYT variants) also cover tuition: up to 3,500 EUR a year for a master's in Europe and up to 9,000 EUR a year for a doctorate. Funding runs up to 24 months for a master's, up to 48 months for a doctorate, and up to 60 months for a direct doctorate with no prior master's. All amounts are paid in Mexican pesos at the current exchange rate.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a Mexican citizen.
• Where you study: You are admitted to or enrolled in a postgraduate programme outside Mexico.
• Degree level: You are doing a master's or doctorate. Bachelor's degrees, short courses and diplomas do not count.
• Format: Your programme is in-person and full time. Online and part-time studies do not qualify.
• Field of study: Your subject is on the priority list, which covers physics and earth sciences, biology and chemistry, medicine and health, education and psychology, humanities, social sciences, agriculture, and engineering.
• Age: No age limit.
• No double funding: You have not already earned this degree level with a previous SECIHTI scholarship, you have no outstanding debt with SECIHTI, and you hold no equivalent Mexican state support for the same purpose.

How to apply

You apply through the SECIHTI portal: first set up your researcher profile (CVU), then submit your application in the Apeiron system. For the 2026 round, applications open on 23 March 2026 and close on 22 May 2026, with results published on 3 August 2026. Researchers review your application, weighing your subject, the quality of your programme and university, and your plan to return to Mexico after your studies.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is open to any Mexican citizen accepted onto a qualifying master's or doctorate abroad in a priority field, so the pool is large and competition is real. Selection turns on how well your subject fits the national priorities and how convincing your return-to-Mexico plan is, not just on where you got in. If your field is clearly on the priority list, you can show a strong return plan, and you apply well before the May deadline, your prospects are solid.
