University of Cambridge - Bohdan Winiarski Scholarships

What you get

At the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law at the University of Cambridge, you will receive approximately 3,835 EUR (£3,250) for a 8-week research visit. This money covers travel costs, your visa, accommodation, insurance, living expenses and the Centre’s fee. You must cover any costs in excess of this yourself. Payment will only be made after your arrival. During your stay, you will have access to a desk, a computer and the library, and you may attend the Centre’s Friday lectures and seminars. Each year, two scholarships are awarded, funded by the Polish Embassy in the United Kingdom: one for applicants from Central Europe and the Western Balkans, and one for applicants from the Eastern Partnership countries. The Centre does not offer any courses and does not award any degrees or certificates.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a PhD student, research assistant or researcher in the field of law.
• Nationality: You are a national of one of the eligible countries. The first group comprises Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia, as well as Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo. The second group comprises Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.
• Research topic: Your project deals with a specific area of public or private international law, that is, with the rules governing relations between states or across borders.
• Language: You speak English fluently.
• Home affiliation: A long-term affiliation with a university or an institution specialising in international law in your home country is preferred, but is not a requirement.

How to apply

Please email your completed application form (including a research proposal), a CV and two letters of reference to the Lauterpacht Centre. Your two referees must send their letters directly from their institutional email addresses. All documents must be in English. The application deadline for the 2027 round was 6 July 2026. Only successful applicants will be notified.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is highly selective: only nationals from a specified list of countries specialising in international law are eligible to apply for just two places per year. As a result, the pool of applicants is smaller than for open scholarships; however, as each place represents a prestigious honour, those who meet the criteria are strong candidates. A clearly defined research project and a solid connection to an institution specialising in international law in your own country are the factors that will set you apart from the rest.
