About this scholarship

Benefit

These are two separate awards from the Department of Mathematics at Aberystwyth University in Wales, both for undergraduates in Maths and Physics. The Mathematics Department Award pays up to about EUR 580 per year (500 GBP) and runs for your whole degree. You get the full 500 GBP a year for a single-honours course (one main subject), or about EUR 290 (250 GBP) a year for a joint-honours course (two subjects). Joint-honours students can hold an award from both departments at once. The Emily Price Scholarship is a one-off payment of about EUR 580 (500 GBP) for your first year only. Emily Price's family and friends set it up to bring more women into Maths and Physics.

Eligibility

  • Where you study: You start a full-time undergraduate degree at Aberystwyth. Transferring straight into year 2 or 3 does not count.
  • Subject: Maths for the Department Award. Maths, Physics or joint-honours Maths/Physics for the Emily Price Scholarship.
  • First degree: For the Emily Price Scholarship, you must not have studied for a degree at any university before.
  • Gender: The Emily Price Scholarship is for women only. The Department Award is open to everyone.
  • Grades for the Department Award: You hold an Aberystwyth University Scholarship & Merit Award in the subject, or you got an A* in A-level Mathematics.
  • What Emily Price looks for: Strong grades and a genuine drive to get more women involved in Maths and Physics.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

For the Mathematics Department Award there is nothing to do: the department's panel considers every applicant automatically and decides who is funded. For the Emily Price Scholarship you fill in a separate application form on the university website. A panel meets in April to choose the winner.

How realistic are your chances?

Both awards are limited to one department and specific subjects, so the pool is small. The Department Award has a clear cut-off: an A* in A-level Maths or a merit award usually secures it, so a well-matched applicant has strong prospects. The Emily Price Scholarship goes to a single woman starting Maths or Physics each year, so it is more competitive. A convincing case for supporting women in the field is what sets you apart.
