What you get

You get a fully funded PhD place at the University of Bath for up to 3.5 years in an engineering or physical-science subject. The package covers your tuition fees and pays a tax-free living stipend (a regular payment to cover your living costs) at the UKRI minimum rate: about EUR 24,900 per year (£20,780) in 2025/26, rising to about EUR 26,100 (£21,805) from October 2026. You also get a training fund of about EUR 1,200 (£1,000) per year for conferences and research travel. The money comes from the UK's Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). Note for international students: the award does not cover UK visa costs or the mandatory Immigration Health Surcharge, so you pay those yourself.

Who can apply

• Degree: You hold, or expect to get, at least a UK upper-second class (2:1) honours degree or the international equivalent in a subject that fits your research project. Some projects ask for a first-class degree or a Master's.
• Field of study: Your project must be in engineering or physical sciences. Most places sit in the Faculty of Engineering & Design and the Faculty of Science, with a few in Humanities & Social Sciences and the School of Management for projects that clearly fit.
• Where you study: You study in person at the University of Bath from the start, except during placements.
• Nationality: Both UK and international students can apply. Under UKRI rules, at most 30% of the awards go to international students.
• English: If English is not your first language, you must meet the university's English language requirements for postgraduate research.

How to apply

Each place is tied to a specific project led by a supervisor and advertised on FindAPhD.com. You pick a project, then submit the University of Bath online application. Applications are reviewed as they come in, and each project advert states its own deadline. In Mathematical Sciences and the School of Management you can also agree your own project with a supervisor. The scheme opens each October and closes once all places are filled.

How realistic are your chances?

Places are tied to individual advertised projects and reviewed as applications arrive. So your prospects depend on fitting one specific project, not on competing in a single large pool. If you clearly meet the 2:1 requirement, match a supervisor's project and apply early before that place is taken, your chances are solid. International applicants face tighter odds, since no more than 30% of awards go to them.
