About this scholarship

What you get

The Franz Werfel Fellowship pays EUR 1,250 per month for a research stay of 4 to 9 months in Austria. You work as a visiting researcher at an Austrian university department and carry out specialist study in libraries, archives or research institutions, with a focus on Austrian literature. The programme is run by OeAD on behalf of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research.

Once you have completed at least 12 fellowship months, you can apply for a long-term follow-up programme lasting up to 20 years. This includes an annual invitation to the Franz Werfel literature symposium, a one-month research grant (EUR 2,500/month) every three years, a habilitation grant (a grant supporting post-doctoral qualification) of up to 6 months in total at EUR 2,500/month, publication support, and project funding.

Eligibility

  • Career stage: You are a post-doctoral university teacher in an early career phase.
  • Field: Your work focuses on German language and/or Austrian literature.
  • Employer: You are employed at a state-accredited university outside Austria.
  • Nationality: Any nationality is welcome.

How to apply

Apply online at scholarships.at. There are two deadlines each year: 1 March and 15 September. A selection committee reviews all applications and recommends candidates to the ministry, which makes the final decision.
