About this scholarship
What the Humanity in Action Fellowship gives you
You will be offered a fully funded, year-long programme on the topic of social justice and human rights. It is run by the charity ‘Humanity in Action’, and participation is free of charge. A scholarship is a place on a funded programme, not a monthly salary. You’ll start with a three-week intensive summer programme in one of the partner cities (Berlin, Copenhagen, Warsaw, Amsterdam or Sarajevo). You will then spend the next 11 months carrying out your own civil society ‘action project’ on a topic such as human rights, remembrance culture, diversity or minority policy. During the weeks spent on site, you’ll be provided with accommodation (with a host family or in a shared room at a youth hostel or hotel) as well as lunch, tea, coffee and snacks. For European programmes, you should budget around 500 EUR out of your own pocket for breakfast, dinner and social activities. Upon completion of the programme, you will become part of the Senior Fellow network, which has over 3,000 members worldwide. There is no monthly cash grant, but if you have limited financial resources, you can apply for a travel allowance and an additional expense allowance once you have been accepted.
Who can apply
- Level: You are currently a student (undergraduate, postgraduate or PhD) or completed your degree no more than two years ago.
- Where you study: You are currently studying or have recently completed your studies in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, Germany, Poland or the Netherlands. Or you grew up in one of these countries, are a national or resident of one of these countries, and are studying anywhere in the world.
- Field of study: Open to all subjects.
- Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. What matters is where you are studying or where you grew up, not your passport.
- Language: You speak English fluently, as the entire programme is conducted in English.
- Motivation: Social justice and civic engagement are important to you, and you are ready to engage in an open, honest debate on difficult issues. A minimum grade point average is not required.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted online and must include a personal statement (max. 500 words), a 90-second video in which you present your idea for an action project, and a CV without a photograph. The application deadline for the 2026 Warsaw Scholarship is 7 June 2026 (midnight). A panel of judges will select the finalists in mid-June. Group interviews, each involving two or three finalists, will take place from 22 June to 19 July, and the final decisions will be announced at the end of July.
How realistic are your chances?
Every year, around 93 scholarship holders are accepted across five cities, so places are limited and the selection process is highly competitive. What matters most is a clear sense of motivation and a concrete idea for an action project – not the best grades, as there is no minimum grade point average requirement. If you can demonstrate a genuine commitment to social justice, present a compelling project and apply early for the programme that suits your country, your chances are good.
