The Japan Scotland Association - The Japan Scotland Association Scholarship

Benefit

You will receive a one-off grant of 200,000 JPY (about 1,150 EUR) for a one-year Master’s programme at a university in Scotland. You do not have to repay the grant and may combine it with other scholarships. The Japan Scotland Association (JSA) awards the grant and funds two of these scholarships each year for Japanese students undertaking a Master’s programme in Scotland.

Eligibility

• Nationality: You are a Japanese national and intend to return to Japan after completing your studies.
• Where you study: You will be studying for a Master’s degree at a university in Scotland, not elsewhere in the United Kingdom.
• Admission: You have received an offer of admission from a Scottish university. A conditional offer also counts.
• Field of study: Any topic is fine.
• English: You can demonstrate your English language skills and take part in a short interview in English.
• Involvement: You are willing to take part in JSA activities once you have completed your studies, for example by talking about your studies.
• Online study: You can apply if your degree programme is offered online. If there is a high number of applicants, priority will be given to students studying on-campus in Scotland.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted to the JSA by email as a PDF file between January and March. The deadline for applications is 31 March. Following a review of the application documents, shortlisted candidates will take part in a brief online interview in English, focusing on their research, their future plans and their contribution to the JSA. All applicants will receive a response by the end of May.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined: you must be a Japanese national and be explicitly enrolled on a Master’s programme in Scotland, so the pool of eligible applicants is small. As two scholarships are awarded each year, there is competition, but the field of applicants is limited. If you clearly meet these requirements, have already been offered a place and can confidently handle the interview in English, your chances are good.
