What the family foundation gives you

You will receive financial support for your training, your degree course or a study period abroad, which will be paid out as a scholarship or a low-interest loan. The Board determines the amount of funding on a case-by-case basis and does not publish this in advance. This Danish family foundation was established in 1986 by the grocer Gert Lassen and his wife Margrethe Lassen. It awards a total of around 100,000 DKK (approximately 13,000 EUR) annually across all grants, meaning that the individual amounts tend to be rather modest. The money can also help you set up a household, start a business or buy a flat.

Who can apply

• Family link: You are a direct descendant of Gert and Margrethe Lassen, or married to one of them. This criterion determines almost everything.
• Second in line: If you are not a family member, you will only be considered if you are a current or former employee of O. Oehlenschlæger, and only if no eligible family members apply.
• Field of study: Any subject.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• University: Any institution.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the Foundation’s online form. The application period runs from 30 September to 15 October, and you can expect a response in November. You should enclose a brief application outlining your plans, along with a financial plan and your Danish tax assessment notices. The board decides on each case individually, and there is no legal entitlement to funding.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a closed family fund, not an open scholarship. Unless you are a descendant of Gert and Margrethe Lassen or an employee of Oehlenschläger, and provided that no relatives have applied, you are not eligible to apply at all. If you do belong to this family, the pool of applicants is very small and your prospects are good. Due to the limited annual budget, the amounts are capped and are divided amongst the family members.
