Master's scholarship for Dutch Studies (Nederlandse Taalunie)

You will receive up to 25,000 EUR to fund a Master’s degree in Dutch or Dutch Studies (neerlandistiek) at a university abroad. This is a one-off grant. It covers your actual costs: tuition fees and enrolment fees, accommodation and living costs for up to 2 years, study materials, travel to and from your place of study, fees for visas or residence permits, and additional insurance linked to the degree programme. The Master’s programme must last at least 1 years (60 ECTS credits) and no more than 2 years (120 ECTS credits), and must be taught predominantly in Dutch. The prize is awarded by the Nederlandse Taalunie (Dutch Language Union), which promotes the Dutch language worldwide.

Who can apply

• Degree: You are in the final year of your Bachelor’s degree in Dutch or Dutch Studies, or you already hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in this subject area. Students in their final year must complete their degree in the year in which they apply.
• Field of study: The Master’s programme you wish to enrol on is part of the Dutch Language or Dutch Studies department and is taught predominantly in Dutch.
• Where you study: The Master’s programme takes place at a university abroad, in a country other than the one in which you completed your Bachelor’s degree. It must not take place in the Netherlands or in Flanders.
• Where you come from: You are studying outside the Dutch-speaking region (i.e. neither in the Netherlands nor in Flanders). Applicants of all nationalities are welcome.
• Grades: You graduated with academic distinction (top marks).
• Ambition: You are aiming for an academic career in the field of international Dutch studies.
• Once only: This scholarship may only be awarded once.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the Taalunie’s online funding portal on mijnNederlands. There are two application deadlines per year: 1 March for students starting in the first semester and 1 September for students starting in the second semester. Applications can only be submitted in the two months leading up to the respective deadline. An advisory committee assesses complete applications within 3 months.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly targeted. Only students of Dutch Studies from outside the Dutch-speaking world who have completed their degree with distinction and are aiming to undertake a Master’s programme abroad are eligible, meaning that the pool of applicants is small. Should funding be limited, the committee places particular emphasis on strong motivation, clear career prospects and applicants from countries where there is no Master’s programme in Dutch Studies. If you meet these criteria and can present a convincing plan, your chances are good.
