About this scholarship

What the MSc in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry offers

You get a one-year, full-time master's degree from the University of Oxford's Department of Chemistry. You train in theory, computer modelling and software development for chemistry. You take eight core modules (including Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics, Electronic Structure Theory and Software Development), five optional modules and a short summer research project. The course suits students who want to go on to doctoral research. If you apply by the January deadline and receive an offer, Oxford automatically considers you for its graduate scholarships, usually without a separate application. For 2026-27 the University expects to offer over 1,100 full or partial graduate scholarships covering tuition and/or living costs. No fixed amount is set for this specific course.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You hold at least a good upper-second-class bachelor's degree (a UK 2:1), or a US GPA of 3.5/4.0 or above. In practice most successful applicants have a first-class degree or a GPA around 3.7.
  • Subject: Your degree is in chemistry, physics, materials science or a related field, and you have covered mathematics, quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics.
  • English: You meet Oxford's higher language level, for example IELTS 7.5 (each part at least 7.0) or TOEFL iBT 110.
  • Nationality: Any country can apply. You study in Oxford, in the UK.
  • Tests: You do not need a GRE or GMAT. Work experience or publications are not required, but they count in your favour.

How to apply

You apply online with your transcripts, three references, an English test result and a personal statement. If shortlisted, you have a short interview, usually about 20 minutes via Microsoft Teams. Apply by the January deadline to be considered for Oxford scholarships. The course is currently closed for 2026-27 entry. You can register by email to be notified when applications open for 2027-28.

How realistic are your chances?

With about 20 places and roughly 73 applications a year, this is a selective course, and most who get in already hold a first-class degree or an equivalent high GPA. If you have strong grades and a solid grounding in maths, quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics, you are a genuine contender. Applying by the January deadline also matters, since it puts you in the running for Oxford's scholarship pool without extra paperwork.
