What a Doctoral Network fellowship gives you

A scholarship here is a paid PhD position within an international research network. You will receive a monthly stipend of living allowance of about 4,010 EUR gross, adjusted by a country factor, as well as mobility allowance of 710 EUR per month. Each scholarship runs for 3 to 36 months, or up to 48 months in the case of a joint PhD programme. You will also receive structured doctoral training, work placements at partner organisations worldwide, and access to a network of universities, research institutes and companies. If you have family commitments, you may be eligible for an additional family allowance. There are also supplements available for special needs or extended periods of absence. The European Union funds the programme under ‘Horizon Europe’ as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You must not already hold a doctoral degree at the time of appointment. You will enrol on a doctoral programme during the course of the project.
• Field of study: All fields of research, from the natural sciences and engineering to the social sciences and humanities.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Where you can go: You must be moving to a new country. As a general rule, you must not have lived or worked in the country of the recruiting organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to starting your role.
• Industrial Doctorates: If you choose this degree programme, you will spend at least 50% of your time outside the academic world, mainly in industry or business.

How realistic are your chances?

Places are highly competitive, as the scholarships are generously funded and advertised worldwide. However, demand is spread across many different networks and job advertisements, so you are not competing against a central pool of candidates. Your chances depend far more on whether you are a good fit for the research topic of an individual project and meet the mobility requirements.
