About this scholarship

Programa Magallanes travel grant (AUIP)

You get your international flight for an academic stay abroad covered: up to 1,200 EUR for a trip between two Ibero-American countries, or up to 800 EUR for a trip between Spain and Portugal. For Ibero-American routes the AUIP books the ticket for you through its own travel agent. For the Spain-Portugal route you pay first and claim the cost back against receipts. Your stay must last at least 20 days and no more than 11 months. Only the flight is paid; you cover accommodation, food, insurance and other living costs yourself. The grant comes from the Asociación Universitaria Iberoamericana de Postgrado (AUIP), a network of 313 universities across 22 Ibero-American countries. Around 120 grants go out each year.

Who can apply

  • Your university: You belong to one of the 313 universities in the AUIP network, spread across Spain, Portugal and 20 Latin American countries.
  • Your role: You are a professor or researcher, a manager of postgraduate or internationalisation programmes, or a master's or doctoral student.
  • Field of study: All subjects are welcome.
  • Purpose of the trip: Your stay helps develop postgraduate programmes at the universities involved.
  • Backing from home: Your home university signs a support letter for your application.

How to apply

You apply online through the AUIP portal. For stays starting between 1 February and 30 June 2026, apply by 10 November 2025. For stays starting between 1 July and 30 November 2026, apply by 20 April 2026. Read the official rules first, and check your own university's internal deadline, which is often earlier.

How realistic are your chances?

Only people already tied to an AUIP member university can apply, so the eligible group is much smaller than for an open scholarship. With around 120 grants a year across the whole network, your prospects are reasonable if you clearly fit and have a confirmed host and institutional backing. Apply early, since your home university may close its own selection before the AUIP deadline.
