About this scholarship

Queen Jadwiga Scholarship

You will receive one-off payment of about 490 EUR (2,100 PLN) plus free accommodation in a shared double room whilst staying in student accommodation. This will fund a research stay of at least 30 days at Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland. The amount will be paid as a one-off sum during the month of your stay. The scholarship honours Queen Jadwiga, who bequeathed her fortune to the Kraków Academy, and is supported by the Central Europe Foundation in Zurich.

Who can apply

  • Your level: You are a researcher (academic staff or research fellow) or a PhD student at a university or research institution outside Poland.
  • Where you come from: Your home institution is located in Central Europe, Eastern Europe, a former Soviet republic (excluding Russia) or a Balkan country.
  • Field of study: Your research focuses on history, economics and finance, political science and public administration, law or international relations.
  • Where you go: You are planning a research visit to Jagiellonian University in Kraków.
  • Local backing: A member of the academic staff at Jagiellonian University must endorse your application. PhD students must also provide a letter of recommendation from their supervisor or the head of their home faculty.

How to apply

Applications are submitted once a year by email to the university’s scholarships office. Please submit your application form, a research proposal and details of your publications and conference presentations. The application deadline is 31 May of the academic year preceding your planned stay. A panel assesses each application on the basis of the research proposal, publications and conference presentations, and then draws up a ranking list.

How realistic are your chances?

The selection criteria for this scholarship are very strict: you must come from a specific group of countries, be working in one of five specialist fields, and already have a member of staff at Jagiellonian University who is willing to support you. The last point accounts for the majority of the pre-selection process, as securing a local contact person means that you are already a serious, well-suited candidate even before you submit your application. In the 2026/2027 round, four scholarships were awarded, so places are scarce. A clear research plan and a solid publication record are crucial for moving up the rankings.
