About this scholarship

SAME Writing-up Bursary (University of Oxford)

You get a one-off payment of up to about 1,150 EUR (up to £1,000) to help you finish and submit your DPhil thesis on time. A DPhil is Oxford's name for a doctorate, the same as a PhD. The money comes from the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography (SAME) and is paid once your fieldwork is complete. Only a few of these bursaries are handed out. The committee may offer you less than you asked for so that more students can benefit.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You are a DPhil (doctoral) research student registered at SAME. Master's students and undergraduates cannot apply.
  • Stage of study: You have passed your Transfer of Status, the point where Oxford formally confirms you as a DPhil student. You are also within 12 months of your Confirmation of Status, a later progress check.
  • Timing: Full-time DPhils can apply from their 4th term, part-time from their 8th term. If you moved up from a PRS route, it is the 7th term full-time or the 14th part-time.
  • Type of research: Your project can involve long fieldwork, or archive- or lab-based research done in Oxford. Both count.
  • First time only: You have not received a Writing-up Bursary before. You can only get it once.
  • Supervisor: Your supervisor approves the application.

How to apply

You apply through the SAME online form. There are three deadlines a year, each on the Monday of 1st week in Michaelmas, Hilary and Trinity terms. You hear back by the end of 2nd week at the earliest. You cannot claim back money you have already spent.

How realistic are your chances?

This bursary is cut narrowly: only DPhil students at one Oxford school who have finished fieldwork and are close to submission can apply, so the pool is small. If you clearly meet the term and status conditions and have your supervisor's backing, your prospects are reasonable. Bear in mind the budget is limited and the committee may award less than you request, so it is not an automatic entitlement.
