Lemmermann Foundation Research Fellowship

A scholarship is a grant that funds a research stay. You will receive 750 EUR per month for a research stay in Rome, Italy, lasting from 1 to 6 months. The scholarship is awarded by the Rome-based Lemmermann Foundation, which is not affiliated with any university. Your research must focus on aspects of Rome and Roman culture within the humanities, from pre-Roman times to the present day. Suitable fields of study include archaeology, history, art history, Italian studies, Latin, musicology, philosophy and philology. You are responsible for organising and paying for your own accommodation in Rome.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a Master’s or PhD student enrolled on a recognised postgraduate programme or working at a research institute.
• Field and topic: Your research project must be in the field of Classical Philology or the Humanities and must focus on Rome and Roman culture. Topics not related to Rome will not be funded.
• Research in Rome: In your application, you must explain why the research must be carried out in Rome, and you must reside there for the duration of the scholarship.
• Age: You must be 35 years old or younger by the application deadline. For 2026, this means that you were born on or after 31 March 1990.
• Language: You have a basic knowledge of Italian.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Where you live: If you live in the Lazio region around Rome, you are not eligible for the standard scholarship. Instead, a one-off grant of 500 EUR may be awarded for an outstanding project.

How to apply

Please apply online via the Foundation’s website by 31 March 2026. Upload a research proposal of between 3 and 6 pages, an academic CV and a copy of your identity document. If you write the research proposal in English, please include a brief summary in Italian and English. You should also name two professors who will send their letters of recommendation directly to the Foundation by email. Selection will be based on the documents you submit.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very specific: your work must focus on Rome, you need a basic knowledge of Italian, and you must explain why your research must take place there. This means that the pool of suitable applicants is small. If your topic is a clear fit and your application provides convincing arguments for a stay in Rome, your chances are good. Only a limited number of scholarships are awarded each year, and the foundation encourages you to apply again in subsequent years.
