About this scholarship
SOAS Additional Study Support Fund
You get a one-off grant that helps cover your living costs while you study at SOAS University of London. The amount is not published in advance. It is a gift, not a loan, so you never pay it back. It does not cover everything, but adds to your other income. Grants above 1,000 GBP (about 1,150 EUR) are paid in up to two instalments. This is one of four SOAS Hardship Funds and is aimed at first-time undergraduates from low-income households who run into money trouble.
Who can apply
- Where you study: You are enrolled on a full-time or part-time on-campus programme at SOAS. Online and distance-learning students cannot apply.
- Level: This is your first undergraduate degree. If you already hold a degree, or transferred in from another university, you cannot apply.
- Residence: You normally live in England.
- Income: Your household income is under 25,000 GBP (about 28,700 EUR) a year, as assessed by Student Finance England. This means you receive the maximum Maintenance Loan.
- Other funding first: You have already taken out your full Maintenance Loan and applied for every other grant and benefit you can get.
- Priority groups: Some applicants come first, for example students with refugee status, care experience or estranged from their family (under 25), the first in their family to study, or from areas where very few people go to university.
How to apply
You apply through one online form that covers all SOAS Hardship Funds. You are automatically checked against every fund you could qualify for. There is no fixed deadline, but apply early, because the money is limited and can run out. Applications are currently closed and reopen in October 2026 for the 2026/27 year.
How realistic are your chances?
This fund is aimed at a small group: you must be a first-time SOAS undergraduate, live in England, and be on the maximum Maintenance Loan. If you clearly meet those conditions and can prove real financial need, your prospects are good, especially if you fall into one of the priority groups. Apply as soon as the fund reopens, since grants are decided while the limited money lasts.
