Taiwan Scholarship for Czech students

You will receive a monthly living allowance of about EUR 425 (15,000 NTD) for a Bachelor's degree, or about EUR 570 (20,000 NTD) for a Master's or doctorate. This will be paid to you for as long as you are studying full-time at a university in Taiwan. In addition, the Taiwanese Ministry of Education will cover your tuition and course fees up to a maximum of 40,000 NTD (approximately 1,140 euros) per semester. You will have to pay for any costs exceeding this amount yourself. The funding runs each year from 1 September to 31 August. The maximum duration of funding is 4 years for a bachelor’s degree, 2 years for a master’s degree and 4 years for a PhD; in total, all Taiwan scholarships you have ever received must not exceed 5 years. The scholarship is administered by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Prague. The following are not covered: administrative fees, thesis supervision fees, insurance, accommodation and internet.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a Czech citizen and do not hold Taiwanese (ROC) nationality.
• Degree level: You have at least an upper secondary school qualification and would like to undertake a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree programme in Taiwan.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Grades: You achieved excellent results in your most recent exams.
• Record: You have no previous convictions.
• Language: For a course taught in Chinese, you will need a TOCFL certificate at level 3 or higher (Taiwan’s official Chinese language test). For a course taught entirely in English, you will need a TOEFL, IELTS or other recognised English language qualification; native English speakers are exempt from this requirement.
• No overlap: You are not currently taking part in an exchange or dual degree programme with a Taiwanese institution, nor are you receiving any other scholarship from a Taiwanese government body.
• Not a repeat: You have not previously studied at the same level in Taiwan, and you have never had a Taiwan scholarship or a Huayu Enrichment scholarship withdrawn.

How to apply

Please send your application documents to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Prague by 1 April. You will also need proof that you have applied to a university in Taiwan, as well as two letters of recommendation in Chinese or English. Selection will be based on the documents you submit.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly targeted: only Czech citizens who wish to study full-time in Taiwan are eligible to apply, meaning the pool of applicants is significantly smaller than for open scholarships. If you have good grades, a clear study plan and can prove that you have already applied to a Taiwanese university, your chances are good. Many applicants for non-English-taught degree programmes fail because they do not arrange to provide proof of their Chinese language skills in good time.
