What you get

You will receive a full scholarship for one academic year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the United States. It covers tuition fees, accommodation, meals and travel expenses, including your flights to and from the US as well as travel within the country. The year runs from autumn to spring, roughly from September to May. You will live in a shared flat with the other Scandinavian scholarship holders. You will also become part of a network of ‘Viking’ alumni across the US, who will host you during your travels. The scholarship is administered by the Brittingham Viking Organisation at UW-Madison. Each year, it sends between 3 and 4 students from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a Swedish citizen.
• Where you study now: You are enrolled at a Swedish university and have already completed some coursework there.
• Field of study: Any subject.
• Languages: You speak English and Swedish fluently.
• Grades and personality: You have good grades, are curious and have strong social skills.
• Availability: You can study at UW-Madison in both the autumn and spring semesters.
• After the year: You are ready to talk about your year abroad at the annual BVO conference in Madison. Afterwards, you will also serve as a member of the Swedish local executive committee for at least 1 years.

How to apply

You apply online using the organisation’s application form. You then upload the written part as a PDF file, together with a personal statement and your CV. The application deadline is 1 December. Scholarship recipients will be selected by the European BVO members.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is presented to just one Swedish student each year. You must already be studying at a Swedish university, commit to spending a full year abroad, and remain actively involved for years afterwards. As there is only one place available, competition is extremely fierce. A compelling personal statement and a genuine interest in the international network are just as important as your grades. If you fit this profile and can demonstrate this commitment, it’s well worth applying.
