About this scholarship
What you get
You will receive a grant for studying abroad, an exchange semester or field research abroad. There is no set upper limit. You submit your own budget, and each application is assessed on a case-by-case basis. You can list all costs associated with your stay abroad, such as accommodation, visa fees and vaccinations. The funding comes from a Swedish foundation established by Gull and Stellan Ljungberg, who ran a leather factory in Uddevalla and wanted to enable young people from their region to gain international experience.
The foundation also offers two special programmes. One is a 12-month paid internship at a Swedish Chamber of Commerce abroad (London, Amsterdam, Hong Kong, Washington or San Francisco), worth approximately 26,000 EUR (300,000 SEK). The other consists of four scholarships, each worth approximately 4,500 EUR (50,000 SEK), for junior doctors or specialists undertaking a clinical placement abroad.
Who can apply
- Regional link: You live or study in Trollhättan or Uddevalla, or you grew up there. You must demonstrate this connection in your application.
- Study level: You are studying at a university, i.e. you are on a Bachelor’s degree programme or working towards a higher qualification.
- Timing: Your stay abroad must take place within the next year. You cannot apply for a trip that you have already undertaken.
- Field of study: All subjects are available to choose from. You are expected to combine your studies abroad with language learning.
- Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, and foreign qualifications are recognised.
- Chamber of Commerce placement (extra rules): You must hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree from a Swedish university (preferably in economics), have a very good command of spoken and written Swedish and English, be a Swedish national, and be under the age of 30. Applications for this placement should be made directly to the relevant chamber, not via the foundation.
How to apply
Applications are accepted once a year via the Foundation’s online portal. The deadline for applications is 31 March. The Board reviews all applications and usually reaches a decision in May. All applicants will receive a response by email towards the end of May, including those whose applications have been rejected.
How realistic are your chances?
This grant is strictly limited in geographical terms. You must live in Trollhättan or Uddevalla, be studying there, or have grown up there, meaning that the pool of eligible applicants is small and there are only a few people competing for this grant. If you can clearly demonstrate this regional connection, are studying at a university and have concrete plans for a period abroad next year, your chances are good. A well-documented financial plan and a valid reason for your stay abroad are more important than a polished presentation.
