About this scholarship

John Hedin Foundation student grant (Mariestad)

You get an annual cash grant to help pay for your higher education. The foundation does not publish a fixed amount, and the board decides each grant individually. For scale: in its most recent year, the foundation handed out about 4 million SEK (about 360,000 EUR) in Mariestad across all its programmes. The money comes from a foundation set up in 1945 by local industrialist John Hedin to support health and education in the town of Mariestad.

Who can apply

  • Connection to Mariestad: You are, or were, officially registered as a resident (folkbokförd) of the municipality of Mariestad.
  • Level of study: You are undertaking a degree programme lasting at least three years at a university, a university of applied sciences (högskola) or an equivalent institution.
  • Where you study: Your programme is in Sweden.
  • Field of study: All topics are permitted.
  • Nationality: Applicants of any nationality are welcome to apply. What matters is your connection to Mariestad.

How to apply

You apply online using the form on the foundation’s website and verify your identity using your Swedish BankID, so no signature is required. Your application must be received between 15 August and 15 October. The board will decide on the grants in December.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very targeted: you must provide proof of residence in Mariestad and be enrolled on a degree course lasting at least three years. This keeps the pool of eligible applicants small and competition limited. If you clearly meet both criteria, your chances are good. The foundation also awards a substantial sum each year, which is an advantage for a suitable applicant.
