Elsa Eschelsson Foundation scholarship

You receive a yearly scholarship to study law at the University of Uppsala, Lund or Stockholm, awarded only to women. The exact amount per scholar is not published and varies from year to year. The foundation paid out 80,000 SEK (about 7,100 EUR) in 2025 and 560,000 SEK (about 49,000 EUR) in 2024, spread across its scholars. You can hold the scholarship for 3 years, with the option to extend by up to 3 more years. The foundation was set up in 1911 in memory of Elsa Eschelsson, the first woman in Sweden to earn a law degree and a doctorate in law. It is managed by Uppsala Akademiförvaltning together with Uppsala University.

Who can apply

• Gender: Only women can apply.
• Field of study: You study law.
• University: You study at the University of Uppsala, Lund or Stockholm.
• Doctoral work is a plus: If you are working on a doctoral thesis, you have priority. When two scholarships are free in the same year, a doctoral candidate can receive both.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply. What matters is that you study law at one of the three named universities.

How to apply

You apply through Uppsala University's central scholarship system at stipendier.uu.se. For the autumn 2026 round, you can apply from 20 August to 10 September 2026 (17:00). The law faculty announces its decision in mid-December 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is cut narrowly: only women studying law at three specific Swedish universities qualify, so the eligible group is small. If you fit those conditions, and especially if you are working on a doctoral thesis, your prospects are good, since doctoral candidates get priority. The total sum paid out swings a lot from year to year, so how much you receive depends heavily on when you apply.
