About this scholarship

Henning Mankell work scholarship

You get a one-off, tax-free grant of 100,000 SEK (about 8,800 EUR). It buys you time to focus on a planned writing project. The idea is to support work written in the spirit of Henning Mankell (1948-2015), the Swedish author known for his social and political engagement. The money comes from a foundation set up by Mankell. It is awarded jointly by the Swedish Playwrights' Union (Sveriges Dramatikerförbund) and the Swedish Writers' Union (Sveriges Författarförbund).

Who can apply

  • Membership: You are a member of either the Swedish Playwrights' Union or the Swedish Writers' Union.
  • Your project: You have a planned writing project with a social or political theme, in Henning Mankell's spirit.
  • Field: You write screenplays, plays, translate drama, or write in another form covered by the two unions.
  • Nationality, age and degree: No limits. What counts is your union membership and your project, not where you are from or how old you are.

How to apply

Apply by email using the official application form plus a separate project description (both are downloadable PDFs). Without the project description, your application is not considered. For the 2026 round the deadline is Monday 24 August 2026, and the decision comes in October 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is narrow: only members of the two unions can apply, and you need a concrete writing project that fits Mankell's socially and politically engaged themes. That keeps the applicant pool small, so a good match with a clear, convincing project description has solid prospects. A sharply focused project tied to Mankell's themes is what sets you apart.
