About this scholarship

Athenvännernas student scholarship

You get a one-off payment of 10,000 SEK (about 870 EUR) to travel to Greece and study there for at least one week, ideally longer. The money covers your travel and living costs during the stay. If space allows, you may also be offered a room at the Swedish Institute at Athens. The award comes from the Friends of the Swedish Institute at Athens (Föreningen Svenska Atheninstitutets Vänner), a society that supports the study of ancient and modern Greece. The board may give out two scholarships in the same round if there is a special reason.

Who can apply

  • Level: You study at bachelor's or master's level.
  • Where you study: Students at Swedish higher education institutions get priority.
  • Field of study: Any subject, as long as it clearly links to ancient or modern Greece.
  • Membership: You must be a paying member of the Friends of the Swedish Institute at Athens, with your fee paid by the time you apply.
  • Language: You apply in Swedish.

How to apply

Send your application by email by 4 November 2026. Include a short description of what you plan to do in Greece, proof of your current studies (a Ladok transcript or equivalent), and a brief budget. The society's scholarship committee decides who gets the award.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is aimed at a narrow group: you must study a Greece-related subject, be a paying member of the society, and apply in Swedish. That keeps the pool of eligible applicants small. If you fit these conditions and present a clear plan for your stay, your prospects are good. Usually only one scholarship is given, so a concrete, well-argued project matters most.
