Jernkontoret - the Swedish Steel Producers' Association - The Jernkontoret Scholarship in heating and heat treatment of steel

What you get

You will receive a scholarship of up to 30,000 SEK (about 2,700 EUR) for work in the fields of heating technology, heat treatment, energy efficiency or furnace construction in steel production. You may use it for laboratory work or computer simulations as part of your dissertation or project, to attend a conference (including the registration fee), for a study trip or for an exchange programme in this field. It also covers specific costs such as materials, travel and accommodation. You must complete the project within 1 years of receiving the grant. The grant is provided by Jernkontoret, the Swedish Steel Manufacturers’ Association.

There is a second, smaller opportunity. Once you have completed a final dissertation (examensarbete) on the subject of energy and furnace technology in steel production, you can apply for up to 10,000 SEK (about 900 EUR). You must submit your final report and a covering letter, and be prepared to present your work at one of the board meetings.

Who can apply

• Level: You are an undergraduate student, a PhD student or a senior researcher.
• University: You are studying or working at a college or university in Sweden.
• Field: Your work relates to the fields of heating, heat treatment, energy efficiency or furnace construction in steel production.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are employed at a Swedish institution.
• No double funding: You confirm that you are not receiving funding from any other body for the same activity.
• Supervisor backing: You have a recommendation from your professor or supervisor.

How to apply

Please send your application by post or email to the Head of Research for Energy and Furnace Technology at Jernkontoret. Please include a brief description of your proposed research, your CV, your academic transcripts, confirmation that you have no other funding, and a letter of recommendation from your supervisor. Applications are accepted throughout the year. The committee will make a decision at its next meeting within 4 months of your documents being submitted.

How realistic are your chances?

This award targets a very specific niche: energy and furnace technology in steel production at a Swedish facility. As a result, the pool of applicants is small; so if your studies or research clearly fit within this field, your chances are good. Applications are accepted throughout the year and are assessed at regular meetings of the selection panel; consequently, a clearly defined project with strong support from your supervisor is more important than the timing of your submission.
