Foundation Peace with the Earth

Flory Gates scholarship (Peace with the Earth Foundation)

You will receive a financial grant to help you set up your organic farm or vegetable garden. The foundation distributes around 100,000 SEK (approximately 9,000 EUR) annually amongst several recipients. In 2026, it awarded 122,000 SEK (approximately 11,000 EUR) to eight people. The amount per recipient varies; the info box gives a guide figure of around 1,340 EUR. This funding is intended for active farmers, not for students, so there is no requirement to be a student. The foundation supports people who use farming methods that rely on the soil’s natural fertility and microbial life. A separate research grant supports projects aimed at developing organic farming methods.

Who can apply

• What you do: You run an organic farm or a vegetable garden as part of your business. The business must already be in operation and must not have been newly established.
• Methods: Growth is promoted by nurturing microbial life in the soil so that it nourishes the plants naturally, rather than resorting to artificial fertilisers and chemical sprays.
• Who is preferred: The foundation favours applicants who care for the land, and women first of all.
• Nationality: Applicants of any nationality are welcome to apply. The grant is intended for cultivation in Sweden.
• Research grant option: For the research track, however, you will need research qualifications, a project description, a CV and references.

How to apply

Complete the online form on the Foundation’s website by 15 January. Applicants for research grants must submit their applications by email by the same date. Please state what you require the funds for and provide a budget and timetable. Farmers must also enclose a written statement from an inspector or adviser regarding the farm. The decision will be announced in March.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant scheme is very narrowly defined. You must already be running an established organic farming or market gardening business in Sweden that operates according to ‘Soil-First’ methods, and preference is given to women, so the target group is small. As around eight grants are awarded each year, the competition is manageable. If you can demonstrate that you run such a business and provide the relevant documentation, your chances are good.
