About this award / prize

What you get

As a writer who has immigrated to Sweden, you will receive a one-off grant of 100,000 SEK (about 8,800 EUR). The fund awards grants every two years, which are paid out in the autumn. In the year 2024, it awarded four grants of 100,000 SEK each; in the year 2026, it awarded two grants of the same amount. The fund is administered by the Swedish Writers’ Union (Sveriges Författarförbund). It supports writers who have come to Sweden as refugees or for other reasons and who wish to work as authors there.

Who can apply

  • Immigrant background: You immigrated to Sweden and started your writing career there.
  • Residence: You’re living in Sweden now.
  • Your work: You have published writing in Swedish, either written in Swedish or translated, so the jury can read and judge it.
  • Financial need: You must prove that you need the money by providing details of your income. To do this, please submit your Swedish tax assessment notice or provide details of your foreign income if you are liable for tax abroad.
  • Nationality: Applicants of any nationality may apply, provided they have immigrated to Sweden and live there.
  • Membership: You do not need to be a trade union member. Non-members should apply via a separate link; members will receive a direct link by email.

How to apply

You should apply via the online form during the application period. This form is only available in the years when grants are awarded, and the next round is expected to take place in 2028. Please attach a PDF list of your published books. Please do not send in the books or manuscripts yourself; the jury will request these later if necessary. The Fund’s board decides who receives funding.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant scheme is very narrowly defined: you must be an author with a migrant background living in Sweden, have published works in Swedish, and demonstrate financial need. As a result, the pool of eligible applicants is small. If you clearly meet these criteria, your chances are good, as several grants are awarded in each round. Please note that the application window is only open every two years; you must therefore apply in a year when grants are being awarded.
