Erasmus+ mobility grant for PhD students

You get a monthly grant for a research or study stay abroad. It is 580 EUR per month for high-cost countries (such as Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Norway) and 530 EUR per month for medium- and low-cost countries (such as Spain, Poland, Portugal, Greece and Türkiye). This applies to stays of 60 to 360 days. For a short stay of 5 to 30 days you instead get 79 EUR per day for the first 14 days and 56 EUR per day from day 15. On top of the grant you get a travel allowance based on the distance from Stockholm, from 28 EUR for a short trip up to 1,735 EUR for the longest, with a higher rate if you travel by train, bus or carpool. If you have children under 18, a permanent disability or protection status in Sweden, you can add a top-up of 250 EUR per month on a long stay. The grant is paid by Stockholm University through the EU Erasmus+ programme.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a registered PhD student (doctoral candidate) at Stockholm University. How your doctorate is funded does not matter.
• What you do abroad: You take courses, gather data or work on your thesis at a partner university, do a traineeship at a company, organisation or university, or teach at a partner university.
• Where you go: An EU country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia or Türkiye. The host must have an Erasmus+ agreement with Stockholm University.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply, as long as you are enrolled at Stockholm University.
• Acceptance: You have a letter of acceptance from the host before you apply.
• Total limit: Your combined Erasmus+ stays at the same study level must not exceed 360 days. You cannot take another EU scholarship for the same stay.

How to apply

You apply through Stockholm University's Mobility Online portal once the host has accepted you. For long stays the window is 15 to 31 May for an autumn start and 15 to 30 November for a spring start. Short stays can be applied for between 1 August and 31 May, at least six weeks before you leave. You also complete an online language assessment before departure.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is open to any PhD student at Stockholm University who arranges a stay at a partner institution. It is not a competition between candidates but a standard funding right once your exchange is set up. The main hurdle is the paperwork: getting the host's acceptance and a signed learning agreement in time for the deadline. If you complete those steps and apply within the window, your prospects are good.
