The Anders Wall Scholarship

You will receive a one-off grant of 200,000 SEK (about 17,800 EUR) to support your further research and personal development in the natural sciences or engineering. You are free to use this amount as you see fit, without having to provide evidence of a budget or a project. The prize is awarded by the Anders Wall Foundation and administered by the Swedish Association of Young Scientists (Unga Forskare), which selects one young researcher from the fields of natural sciences and engineering each year. You will also become a member of the ‘Wallumni’ network, a group of former Anders Wall scholarship holders from Sweden, Finland and the Baltic states. The award ceremony takes place every year on 10 March, at which you will give a short talk about your career and your research.

Who can apply

• Age: You must not be older than 25 at the time of application. This is the decisive upper age limit.
• Field: You work in the natural sciences, mathematics or engineering.
• Level: You are a young researcher who has distinguished yourself through your own project. To date, the award has been won by undergraduates, postgraduates and PhD students, so there is no specific level of study required.
• What counts: A keen interest in science, an original and creative approach to work, and clearly recognisable potential for development. Good communication skills are also an advantage.
• Nationality and university: Open to all nationalities and all universities.
• Membership: You do not need to be a member of ‘Unga Forskare’.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted by email between 1 September and 1 November. Please write your application in Swedish. It should include a brief summary, a personal statement, a CV, a description of your research project and an explanation of how the scholarship would contribute to your personal development, evidence of your previous involvement, and references. A nomination committee will then select the candidate who best meets the criteria.

How realistic are your chances?

This is Sweden’s largest scholarship for students in the natural sciences, and as only one or a few people are selected each year, competition is fierce. The award goes to an outstanding individual: a compelling track record of your own research and genuine scientific ambition count for more than grades alone. If you are under 25 years old, have an outstanding project to your name and can write a compelling application in Swedish, you have a real chance.
