Ingeborg och Henric Bäckströms fond scholarship

You get a one-off payment of around 4,180 SEK (about 370 EUR) for your university studies. Each year the fund pays out 10 equal scholarships, so the exact amount can vary. The same person can receive it at most twice. It is run by the City of Karlstad's upper-secondary school authority (Gymnasieförvaltningen) to help students from Karlstad pay for higher education.

Who can apply

• Level: You study full-time at a university or university college (högskola). Vocational colleges (yrkeshögskola) do not count.
• Where you study: Your university can be in Sweden or abroad.
• School background: You finished upper secondary school (gymnasieexamen) at a gymnasium in Karlstad.
• Field of study: Most subjects qualify. You cannot study trade or economics, and you cannot study creative or craft fields such as journalism, singing, music, painting, writing, cooking, arts and crafts, or textile and handicraft trades.
• Financial need: Your income in the last tax assessment was no higher than two "basbelopp" (a standard Swedish base amount used to set benefit limits).
• Grades: Among eligible applicants, the scholarships go to those with the best study results.

How to apply

You apply online through the City of Karlstad's e-service. The application opens in the later part of the spring term and is announced on the city's scholarship page. There is no interview. Selection is based only on your study results and the income limit.

How realistic are your chances?

The eligible group is small: you must have finished upper secondary school in Karlstad, study an allowed subject, and stay under the income limit. Among those who qualify, places go to the strongest grades. If you clearly fit the criteria and can show good grades, your chances of one of the 10 scholarships are solid.
