Elite Sports Scholarship (Elitidrottsstipendiet)

You will receive 60,000 SEK (about 5,450 EUR) for one academic year, paid out over two semesters. You will also have access to experts from the Swedish Sports Confederation’s elite sports department in the fields of sports psychology, sports medicine, physiology and performance development. Each year, 60 athletes are selected. They are invited to the annual Swedish Sports Gala (Idrottsgalan), where the awards are presented, as well as to a camp at Bosön, the national sports centre, to network with other scholarship holders and learn together. Svenska Spel and the Swedish Sports Confederation (Riksidrottsförbundet) jointly administer the scholarship.

Who can apply

• Sport: You play for a Swedish national team.
• Studies: You are enrolled at a university, a university of applied sciences (högskola) or a vocational college (yrkeshögskola).
• Study pace: You are studying full-time (100%) or part-time (50%).
• Field of study: Any subject area. Previous scholarship holders have studied law, engineering, economics, education and psychology.

How to apply

Applications are accepted once a year. The 60 scholarship recipients are selected and announced in September, before the start of the academic year for which the scholarship applies. The scholarships are then presented in January at the Swedish Sports Gala.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very restrictive: applicants must be active at national team level whilst also studying, so only a few are eligible. For the period 2026–2027, 280 athletes applied and 60 were selected – so there is competition, but it is by no means a lottery. If you clearly meet the requirements for the national team and are genuinely able to balance sport with your university studies, your prospects are good.
