What you get

You can pick one of two options. Either a scholarship of up to 250,000 SEK (about 22,000 EUR) paid directly to you, or a research grant of 250,000 SEK (about 22,000 EUR) or more paid to your university or research body. The money is for chemistry research. It can cover project running costs, a research stay abroad, or travel to a conference to present your own results. In the 2025 round the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (Kungl. Vetenskapsakademien) had 1,667,000 SEK (about 147,000 EUR) to share across all applicants.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a doctoral student, or a researcher who already holds a doctorate.
• Field: Your work is in chemistry.
• Where you work: You are employed at a Swedish university or another Swedish public research body.
• Career stage: Researchers who earned their doctorate in the last seven years are preferred. Time off for reasons such as parental leave is added back, so it does not count against you.
• Purpose: The money must fund work you have not finished yet. Anything already completed when the decision is made is not funded.

How to apply

You apply online through your KVA web account. You state whether you want a scholarship or a research grant. The next call opens in 2027. You get the result by email and in your web account about three months after the deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is limited to chemistry researchers employed at Swedish institutions, so the pool is much smaller than for open scholarships. Early-career researchers who finished their doctorate in the last seven years are favoured. If you fit that profile and have a concrete, unfinished project or trip to fund, your prospects are solid. The funding is a fixed pot shared across many applicants, so a clear, well-justified request stands out.
